Horror genre research: Characters

Characters

Protagonist:
In horror movies, the protagonist tends to either be a hero or a victim; he/she could be plagued by the antagonist or tasked to save the world. However, in quite a lot of cases, the protagonist does a 180 on their personality if they were a victim. (Spoiler alert) An example of this is in Jennifer's Body where Amanda Seyfried ends up killing Megan Fox.

Antagonist:
In most of the cases, the antagonist tends to be inhuman; such as an animal or monster. This is to show the basic human fears; the primal instinct from when we were hunters. However, if the antagonist is a human, they tend to outsmart the antagonist on several occasions. In both cases the antagonist is shown as superior to the protagonist to emphasise how hopeless they are. An example of an iconic antagonist is Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th.

Final girl:
A final girl is a horror movie trope where at the end of a movie, there is only one character left alive to face the killer and tell the story afterwards. The final girl tends to be innocent with an unisex name; such as Sidney or Laurie. On occasion, the final girl shares a history with killer; such as Sidney and Roman from Scream 3. In the final confrontation between the antagonist and the final girl, the final girl tends to be masculinised by taking a weapon and attacking the villain.
